Technology & Diversity

The Chair of "Technology and Diversity" at the Institute of Sociology deals with the manifold interactions between human diversity and technical innovations. In various projects, the staff of the chair investigates how technology shapes and changes categories of diversity, and what influence diversity has on the development and application of technical innovations. One focus of research is on biotechnological and biomedical developments, especially in the fields of genetics, genome research, neuroscience and related technologies. With regard to diversity, we do not only focus on gender issues. Rather, we like to expand the field of German diversity research and to address the entire spectrum of diversity, for example, questions of social origin and ethnicity, age and aging, disability, religion, and the difference between social and biological gender.

Further focal points in research and teaching are cultural sociological issues, medical sociology, (qualitative) methods of empirical social research, social problems and social control, security research, visual sociology, and science and technology studies.
