Sociology is an empirical based science. That’s why the examination of sociological theories and hypotheses of the social reality belong the core area of sociological research.

In our lectures and tutorials we convey the essential techniques of empirical social research and their foundation in philosophy of science. These competences are not only necessary for a specialized evaluation of research results, but also for a self-reliant planning, execution, analysis and interpretation of empirical research projects. Both quantitative and qualitative research strategies are considered.

These qualified skills in data collection and analysis are intensely demanded in academic and non-academic research. The focus of the chair for methods of empirical social research is particularly on the fields of of analytical sociology, computational social science, and social network analysis.

Sociology is a science which attempts the interpretive understanding of social action to arrive at a casual explanation of its course and effects.
