Bachelor’s Program in Social Sciences

From the third semester of the Bachelor’s program in Social Sciences onwards, our chair offers several courses which cover modules in the field of Sociology of Technology and Organization.

One of these courses is, for example, the lecture Sociology of Technology, held by Prof. Dr. Häußling, which grants insights into the elementary concepts and current branches of research of this field of study.

In various practical seminars, you will be taught methods which will then be applied to practical examples. One example is the practical seminar “The professional field of art photographers and the networking of museums and the photography scene”, in which students were able to practice interview situations with photographers from all around the region.

Another example is the seminar “Sociological Methods of Acceptance Research” in which the question is investigated how acceptance regarding the introduction of, for example, new socio-technical systems in organizations is measurable and which sociological methods are appropriate for this.


Master’s Program in Sociology

TheMmaster’s program in sociology at RWTH Aachen University has a techno-sociological focus. Beyond that, it imparts deepened skills in the two fundamental competence areas of “Sociological Theories” and “Methods of Empirical Social Sciences”. On this foundation, students will learn how to measure, in a methodically controlled way, the dynamic interrelation between technology and society and how to theoretically reflect on their findings.

In practical seminars, master students are given the opportunity to contribute to current research projects of our chair and to meet companies as potential future employers.

In the Master's seminar “Communication networks by digitalization in organizations”, students analyze, for example, the internal communication networks of medium-sized companies and deduce recommendations for action. For this purpose, a close exchange with the management and their employees is necessary.

This first contact with companies may result in further, practice-oriented topics for Master's theses which are often door openers to the professional world.
